WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's soccer team battled Davis & Elkins to a scoreless draw here Saturday in non-conference action at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
It was a bit of a frustrating result for Coach
Barry Christmas' Hilltoppers (0-1-1), who controlled the run of play most of the way on a hot and muggy afternoon.
West Liberty outshot the Senators (0-0-1) by a whopping 23-8 margin but couldn't get the ball past D&E keeper Lauren Hill, who kept the visitors in the contest throughout with seven big saves.
The Hilltoppers created numerous scoring opportunities and even hit the frame twice only to come away empty-handed.
Emily Evans nearly put WLU on top in the 32nd minute when she ripped a shot off the post in what proved to be the best scoring chance for either team in the first half.
The best scoring opportunity of the match came in the 66th minute when
Layne Hartnell hit the crossbar with a shot. West Liberty kept the rebound alive but Hill was able to save
Jordan Smith's follow attempt to keep the Black and Gold off the board.
Lauren Hartnell stopped all four shots Davis & Elkins put on frame to earn the shutout in goal for West Liberty.
The Lady Hilltoppers head to Canton, Ohio on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. match at Malone.
