SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Makenzie Amend fired a 3-hit shutout in the opener here Sunday as the West Liberty University softball team split a doubleheader with Shepherd at Sara Cree Field.
Coach
Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (17-21, 11-17) rode Amend's strong right arm to a 1-0 win in the opener only to see the Rams (29-15, 19-9) rebound to take a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.
The hard-throwing Amend struck out 11 Shepherd batters and didn't allow a Ram past second base until the bottom of the sixth, when the hosts mounted their only threat.
A hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Shepherd with two out in the bottom of the sixth. Amend struck out the next batter to end the threat and retired the side in order in the seventh to finish off the win.
Katie Beeman scored the only run of the game for West Liberty, ripping an 0-2 pitch down the line in right for a double in the top of the third and coming around to score on an infield error. Kelsi Johnson added a couple of singles for the Black and Gold.
In the second game, Shepherd broke up a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and the visitors couldn't overcome the deficit.
The Hilltoppers avoided the shutout by plating an unearned run with two out in the bottom of the seventh but managed just four hits in the finale. Beeman doubled again for WLU's only extra-base hit.
West Liberty heads to Greensburg, Pa. on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Seton Hill.
