    FAIRMONT, W.Va. – West Liberty's Makenzie Amend carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning for the second consecutive week here Saturday as WLU split a Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader with Fairmont State.
    Amend hurled Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (16-20, 10-16) to a 6-2 win in the first game but the Falcons (20-20, 16-10) rebounded with an 8-3 nod in the nightcap.
    After coming within a strike of a no-hitter against Shepherd last week, the hard-throwing Amend flirted with history again on Saturday.
    The workhorse freshman had allowed only four baserunners - all on walks - as she carried a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning of the opener.
    Unfortunately for the former Wheeling Park all-stater, history proved elusive once again as Fairmont's Beth Cook led off the seventh with a solo home run over the wall in left-center. After a walk, Jessie Weaver added a two-out RBI double but Amend fanned the next batter to finish off the win.
    Amend's teammates provided plenty of support at the plate as eight of the nine WLU starters had at least one hit.
    Kelly Mullins led the way with three singles while Katie Higginbotham added an RBI double and Haley Collett tripled. Kelsi Johnson, Connor Assif and Skylar Fankhauser all singled and drove in a run.
    In the second game, Fairmont broke open a 1-0 contest with four unearned runs in the bottom of the third and coasted the rest of the way.
    Kat Donzella doubled home a pair of runs and Mullins had an RBI single as West Liberty managed just five hits in the finale.
    The Hilltoppers head to the Eastern Panhandle on Sunday for an afternoon doubleheader against Shepherd.
