WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The regionally-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team swept all six singles matches here Friday to hand West Liberty an 8-1 setback in a Mountain East Conference match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (8-8, 3-3) certainly made their presence felt during the opening doubles segment as the MEC-leading Bobcats (13-3, 6-0) barely escaped with a 2-1 lead.
The visitors got an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles but West Liberty's No. 2 tandem of Nick Liddy and Matt Lynch knocked off the visitors' No. 2 pairing of Ramon Rodriguez and Ferran Berga in a tiebreaker after a lengthy struggle.
The No. 1 doubles match between WLU's Daniel Nogareda and Camilo Moncayo and Wesleyan's Maycon Diaz and Yonas Gebre also went to a tiebreaker with the Bobcats prevailing.
The suspense didn't carry over into singles action as the Bobcats posted straight-set victories in all six matches to close out the win.
The Hilltoppers will try to get back on track Saturday when they host West Virginia State in a 3 p.m. match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
