WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 non-conference win against Davis & Elkins here Tuesday in a see-saw affair at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (7-7) grabbed an early advantage with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
The visiting Senators (2-14) found themselves with their backs to the wall after West Liberty's Matt Lynch and Hayden Blazer rolled to straight-set wins without losing a single game in their matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but stayed alive with a win at No. 1 singles.
Davis & Elkins eventually forged a 4-4 tie by taking straight-set decisions at No. 2 and No. 6 singles so all eyes turned to the No. 3 singles match between WLU's Vincent Huynh and D&E's Andrew Shand.
Huynh, a freshman from Paris, France, carried the Black and Gold into the winner's circle by fighting his way to a 6-4 6-4 victory to close out the match.
The Hilltoppers return to Mountain East Conference action on Wednesday when they travel to Fairmont for a 4 p.m. match against Concord.
