SALEM, Va. – The West Liberty University softball team couldn't get the bats going on Friday as the Black and Gold was blanked in back-to-back games in the Salem (Va.) Tournament at Moyer Field.
Coach
Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (2-3) dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Shippensburg (Pa.) in their first game of the day before closing out the afternoon with a 6-0 setback against Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.).
In the opener, the Raiders (7-4) plated an unearned run with 2 out in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win. WLU starter Makenzie Amend retired the first two batters on infield grounders but a walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases and the winning run scampered home on a passed ball.
Amend was saddled with the hard-luck loss despite giving up only 5 singles while striking out 7 and issuing 7 walks in a complete-game effort. Sydney Bennington and Kelsi Johnson had the only hits for the Black and Gold.
In the second game, the Railsplitters (11-7) pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the first to grab an early lead and never relinquished it.
The Hilltoppers got a pair of singles from Allie Cook and a double from Katie Beeman but couldn't string enough hits together to dent the scoreboard.
