HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip here Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 loss to Kutztown (Pa.).
Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers picked up a big win at No. 1 doubles when Camilo Moncayo and Daniel Nogareda gutted out a 9-7 victory against the Bears' top tandem of Nik Kodinov and Gabe Souza.
Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, Kutztown won the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
That proved to be the difference as the teams split the six doubles matches. Nogareda won a three-set marathon at No. 1 singles while Zack Kirkwood also took a three-setter at No. 6 singles. Vincent Huynh rolled to a straight-set win at No. 4 singles.
The West Liberty men return to the court on Monday morning for an 8 a.m. match against Quincy (Ill.)
