CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team had its 5-game winning streak snapped here Saturday afternoon in a 62-51 loss to the University of Charleston.
The defensive-minded Golden Eagles (10-13, 7-11) held Coach Kyle Cooper's Hilltoppers (12-12, 11-7) to just 32 percent shooting from the floor as WLU posted its lowest point total of the season.
Charleston worked its game plan to perfection, running the shot clock down to single digits on nearly every possession and collapsing into the paint on defense to take dominant junior post Marissa Brown out of the West Liberty offense.
Despite the slowdown, the Hilltoppers used a strong second quarter to take a 29-24 lead into the halftime locker room with four 3-pointers from McKenna Shives helping fuel the surge.
Momentum turned midway through the third quarter when Brown went to the bench with her third personal foul. The Golden Eagles rallied and the teams traded leads toward the end of the period before setting into a 40-40 deadlock heading into the fourth quarter.
Octavia Loll opened the final stanza with back-to-back hoops to put UC ahead to stay and the Golden Eagles finished strong, holding WLU to just two field goals over the final 6:15 to seal the upset.
Shives hit six 3-pointers to lead West Liberty with 18 points while Brown finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds. The Hilltoppers hit just 19-of-58 shots from the floor, made just 8-of-28 (28 percent) from the 3-point arc and lost the battle of the boards by a 40-29 margin.
Loll led all scorers with 19 points while Abby Watson scored all 12 of her points in the second half while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Lady Hilltoppers hit the road again on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. test at West Virginia Wesleyan.
