WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University picked up two more Mountain East Conference wins Friday night, blanking West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-0, and handing Glenville State a 3-1 setback in MEC action at the ASRC.
Coach
Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (17-4, 6-0) started the evening on fire with a 25-9 romp in the opening set of the first match and the visiting Bobcats (4-13, 3-3) never recovered. West Liberty scored 10 of the last 12 points in the second set to win going away, 25-15, before coasting to a 25-20 nod in the third set.
Caitlin Clarke and
Abbi Gillson led the attack with 10 and 9 kills, respectively, while
Madison Clayton checked off a lot of boxes with 4 kills, 5 blocks and 5 service aces.
Renee Lemke posted a double-double with 11 digs to go along with a match-high 18 assists.
Kailee Cunningham finished with 16 digs.
The Black and Gold got off to another fast start against the Pioneers (5-9, 1-5), dominating the opening set with a 25-12 win. Glenville State made things interesting by gutting out a 25-20 victory in the second set but WLU righted the ship with a 25-11 rout in the third set before closing out the match with a 25-13 verdict.
Raimey Benson set the tone with 11 kills and 4 blocks while
Stephanie Leonard added 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Clayton matched Benson's match-high 4 blocks and chipped in with 7 kills. Clarke also finished with 7 kills.
Kendall Souder led all players with 24 assists while Cunningham and
Jo Lyn Jurek charted 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Friday's two wins set up a mid-season MEC showdown on Tuesday when the Hilltoppers make the short trek down Route 88 to take on nationally-ranked Wheeling Jesuit in a rematch of last year's MEC Tournament championship final. Both teams are unbeaten in conference play this season.
First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the McDonough Center.
