URBANA, Ohio –
Cate Calissie broke up a scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the 89th minute here Wednesday to give the West Liberty University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory against Urbana in Mountain East Conference action at Urbana Stadium.
The completed a sweep of the season series for Coach
Barry Christmas's Hilltoppers (3-7-2, 3-4-1), who had handed the Blue Knights (2-9-0, 1-7-0) a 2-0 setback late last month at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
The match seemed destined for overtime until the Black and Gold mounted one final rush late in regular time.
Working off a throw-in, Calissie ripped a shot toward goal from about 30 yards out and the Hilltoppers caught a break when Urbana committed a hand-ball infraction. That gave West Liberty a free kick from the middle of the field, just under 25 yards from goal.
Calissie took the free kick and curled a hard drive into the top left hand corner of the cage, just inches past the outstretched hands of diving Blue Knight keeper Ashton Curnutte.
Urbana had a slight 10-8 edge in shots for the match but WLU senior
Lauren Hartnell had four saves to earn the shutout in net. Curnette was credited with 3 saves in a losing cause.
The West Liberty women return home on Sunday for a Senior Day match with Concord. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff at the West Liberty Soccer Complex.
