WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team came away on the short end of a 3-2 decision here Friday night in a 2-hour marathon Mountain East Conference match against Urbana at the ASRC.
Trailing by a 2-1 count, Coach Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (9-8, 1-2) came up big with a 25-19 win in the fourth set to carry the Blue Knights (7-8, 2-0) into a winner-take-all fifth set.
Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, the visitors scored the first five points of the final set and West Liberty's comeback effort fell just short as Urbana remained unbeaten in Mountain East Conference play with a 15-12 nod.
The loss took the edge off an impressive night for the Hilltoppers'
Caitlin Clarke, who led WLU with a season-high 19 kills.
Raimey Benson added a dozen kills while
Sydney Scherer weighed in with 8 kills, 2 aces and a pair of blocks.
Kendall Souder and
Kailee Cunningham each posted double-doubles in a losing cause for the hosts. Souder had a team-high 24 assists to go along with 10 digs while Cunningham led all players with 19 digs and picked up 11 assists.
The Hilltoppers will try to rebound on Saturday morning when they return to the ASRC to host Notre Dame in an 11 a.m. match.
