SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team battled back from an early deficit to earn a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Shepherd Saturday afternoon at the Butcher Center.
Coach Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (9-7, 1-1) saw the Rams (9-4, 0-2) pull out a 25-23 win in the opening set but WLU struck back with a 25-23 win of its own to square the match. The Black and Gold followed that up with another 25-23 win before outlasting Shepherd, 29-27, in a marathon fourth set to close out the win.
Raimey Benson posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs to go along with 3 blocks and a service ace while
Morgan Farley came up big with 13 kills.
Sydney Scherer stuffed the stat sheet with 8 kills, 5 blocks and 16 digs while
Olivia Baumhoer added 8 kills and a pair of blocks.
Mackenzie Sims checked off a lot of boxes with 7 kills and 16 digs to accompany an ace and a block while
Kailee Cunningham led all players with 32 digs. Freshman setters
Kendall Souder and
Renee Lemke contributed 26 and 21 assists, respectively.
The West Liberty women return home to host Urbana on Friday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the ASRC.
