FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team got off to a fast start here Friday night but couldn't hang on as host Fairmont State rallied to a 3-1 win in a mutual Mountain East Conference opener.
Coach Kayla Mull's short-handed Hilltoppers (8-7, 0-1) stormed back from a 5-point deficit to take a 25-22 win in the opening set but the Falcons (9-4, 1-0) returned the favor with a 25-22 nod in the second set before closing out the hotly-contested match by scores of 25-14 and 25-22.
The Black and Gold were playing without two injured starters but still gave a good account of themselves.
Raimey Benson had a big night with 17 kills while
Sydney Scherer added 10 kills and 4 blocks.
Caitlin Clarke stuffed the stat sheet with 8 kills, 15 digs and 2 blocks while freshman setters
Kendall Souder and
Renee Lemke each posted double-doubles. Souder had a team-high 22 assists to go along with 11 digs while Lemke finished with 14 assists and 20 digs.
Mackenzie Sims paced the Hilltoppers with 29 digs.
The West Liberty women head to the Eastern Panhandle on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match at Shepherd.
