Box Score     WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team handed Slippery Rock its second loss of the season here Friday as the MEC/PSAC Crossover Tournament got under way at the ASRC.
    Coach Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (6-5) dropped the opening set to The Rock (8-2) by a 25-20 count but bounced back to win the next two sets, 25-21 and 26-24. The Pennsylvania squad forced the match to its limit with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set but West Liberty led wire-to-wire in the final set before coasting to a 15-10 decision.
    Raimey Benson put down a match-high 15 kills to pace the Hilltoppers while Olivia Baumhoer and Stephanie Leonard finished with 10 and 9 kills, respectively. Sydney Scherer and Morgan Farley each added 8 kills in the 2-hour marathon.
    Kendall Souder posted her first career double-double with 34 assists and 17 digs while Renee Lemke nearly duplicated that feat with 19 assists and 9 digs. Kailee Cunningham led all players with 35 digs.
    The impressive win earned the Black and Gold a split on the day as WLU had dropped a 3-0 verdict to powerful Pitt-Johnstown in the morning's opening match.
    The Mountain Cats (9-1) took control early with wins in the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-13. The Hilltoppers led for most of the third set only to see UPJ stage a late rally and close out the win with a 27-25 triumph. Stephanie Leonard had 7 kills and 4 blocks for West Liberty while Souder added 13 assists and Cunningham charted 17 digs.
    The Hilltoppers wrap up the MEC/PSAC Crossover with two more matches on Saturday. West Liberty hosts Shippensburg at 11 a.m. before bringing down the curtain with a 6:30 p.m. match against Clarion.
