GROVE CITY, Pa. – A short-handed West Liberty University men's tennis team breezed to a 6-3 win in a mutual season opener at Grove City College Wednesday afternoon.
Despite having only five players available for action, Coach
Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers took two of the three doubles matches and swept the top four singles matches in straight sets to claim the victory.
Camilo Moncayo and Nick Liddy teamed up for a thrilling tiebreaker win at No. 1 doubles and followed that up with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to jump start the Black and Gold.
Matt Lynch and
Zach Kirkwood rolled to an 8-5 decision at No. 2 doubles before clinching the win by taking their No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches.
The Wolverines' points came from forfeits at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles and a win at No. 5 singles.
The West Liberty men will be idle this weekend but return to action on Sept. 22 when they head to Erie, Pa. for the first day of the ITA Atlantic Region championships.
