Lady Hilltopper Bats Silenced by UVa-Wise

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team couldn't get the bats going against UVa-Wise ace Taylor Brandts Sunday afternoon in losing both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex.
Brandts hurled back-to-back shutouts against Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (11-19, 5-13), leading the Cavaliers (20-14, 11-7) to a 1-0 victory in the first game before closing out the sweep with a 4-0 win in the finale.
West Liberty's Savannah Sieger battled Brandts on virtually even terms through the first five innings of the opener, striking out 9 and giving up only one walk. The visitors plated their only run in the top of the fourth when Alexa Hernandez doubled home Bridget Henzel to break up the scoreless tie.
Brandt struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter while not allowing a WLU runner past second base in finishing off a 3-hit gem.
In the second game, the Cavaliers broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth and added a pair of insurance tallies in the seventh to provide more than enough support for another dominant performance from Brandts.
The hard-throwing junior didn't allow a Hilltopper past second base for the second straight game while striking out seven and giving up only one walk. Sydney Bennington collected three of West Liberty's four singles in the loss.
The WLU women head to Buckhannon on Friday for a noon doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan.
