West Liberty Tennis Dominates in Weekend Sweep

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team strengthened its hold on first place in the Mountain East Conference standings by sweeping a pair of matches from Concord and UVa-Wise this weekend at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach Sam McCullough's two-time defending MEC champion Hilltoppers (10-4, 5-0), currently No. 2 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, coasted to a 9-0 win against the winless Mountain Lions (0-8, 0-5) on Saturday before blanking the Cavaliers (4-14, 1-5) by a similar 9-0 count on Sunday morning.
West Liberty charted a similar path to victory in both matches, taking control early with dominating sweeps of the three doubles matches and following that up with six straight-set romps in singles action.
Making the victories even more impressive is the fact that several WLU players are playing up a level due to the injury that has kept three-time All-MEC senior Andy Ponder sidelined for the past few matches.
The Hilltoppers will take their 7-match winning streak on the road Tuesday when they step out of conference play for a 3 p.m. match at Davis & Elkins.
