Hilltoppers Hammer Regionally-Ranked Falcons

WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team breezed to an 8-1 victory against Fairmont State on Thursday in a battle of regionally-ranked Mountain East Conference squads at the Wheeling Park "Bubble."
Coach Sam McCullough's two-time defending MEC champion Hilltoppers (8-4, 3-0), ranked No. 2 in this week's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, had little trouble handing the No. 7-ranked Falcons (12-8, 4-1) their first league loss of the season.
West Liberty took control early, sweeping all three doubles matches by convincing margins.
Baptiste Perrin and Santiago Gutierrez were dominant at No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 win against Fairmont's top duo of Gui Pachane and Tom Liddy. The Hilltoppers got matching 8-4 victories from Matt Tully and Luke Flanagan at No. 2 doubles and Pablo Cimorra and Camilo Moncayo at No. 3.
Perrin, Gutierrez, Tully and Moncayo all scored straight-set triumphs in singles play with Cimorra bouncing back from a tiebreaker loss in the first set of his No. 6 singles match to pull out a three-set win.
The Black and Gold will host a pair of MEC matches this weekend with Concord set for a 1 p.m.visit on Saturday and UVa-Wise coming in for a 10 a.m. match on Sunday.
