Road Sweep for West Liberty Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball went on the road Monday and swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from Fairmont State.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (11-15, 5-9) pulled out a 4-3 extra-inning victory in the opener before hammering their way to an 8-2 win over the Falcons (11-19, 4-8) in the finale.
In the first game Sydney Bennington snapped a 3-3 tie with a solo home run in the top of the ninth to give West Liberty the win.
Bennington also singled to post a multi-hit game and Samantha Kilbane chipped in with a pair of singles. Kaitlyn Higginbotham added an RBI single and Nicki Mihalik doubled.
Savannah Sieger came on in relief to pitch out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth and retired the last 10 Falcon batters to get the win.
The Hilltoppers took care of business early in the second game, batting around in the top of the third to send six runs across the plate and never looking back.
Bennington singled and launched another circuit blast to lead the visitors while Skylar Minzer added two singles and an RBI. Nicole Chris delivered a two-run single and Kilbane contributed an RBI single.
West Liberty is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader at Salem International on Thursday with the first game set for a 2 p.m. start.
