Lady Hilltoppers Split With Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University softball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Urbana here Friday afternoon.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (15-29, 8-22) were 5-0 shutout victims in the first game but bounced back to hand the Blue Knights (16-24, 12-18) a 3-2 loss in the finale.
Urbana jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opener with four first-inning runs and Carly Allen did the rest. The Blue Knight hurler didn't strike out or walk a batter but West Liberty managed just two harmless singles and never got a runner past second base.
It was a different story in the second game as WLU broke up a 1-1 tie with a little 2-out lightning in the top of the fifth.
Kylee Ensign had singled and moved to second base on a passed ball when the hosts decided to make a pitching change, bringing Allen on in relief.
Nicki Mihalik greeted the Blue Knight ace with an RBI double and Kelsi Johnson followed with a single, scoring Mihalik with what proved to be a crucial insurance run.
Urbana got a run back in the bottom of the sixth and threatened again with back-to-back singles to lead off the seventh. 
West Liberty pitcher Linda Hall got out of the jam, however, starting a double play by getting the next batter to tap a comebacker to the mound before finishing off the win with another infield groundout.
Mihalik had two singles to go along with her RBI double while Ensign had a pair of singles and knocked in the Hilltoppers' first run. Johnson and Kaitlyn Higginbotham each finished with two hits.
The Hilltoppers head to South Euclid, Ohio on Saturday to close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Notre Dame.
