WLU Softball Comeback Falls Just Short

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to North Division-leading Shepherd Friday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (13-25, 6-18) saw the Rams (27-17, 13-9) run away with a 10-1 victory in the first game before coming out on the short end of a 2-1 tally in a tightly-played finale.
West Liberty battled to the wire in the second game as Samantha Kilbane doubled and scored on a two-out single by Sydney Bennington, pulling the hosts within a run at 2-1, only to see Shepherd hurler Lori Sturgill retire the next batter to finish off her complete-game win.
Bennington had three of the Hilltoppers' six hits while Kilbane added a single to go along with her seventh-inning double.
The Rams controlled the opener from the start, scoring three runs in the top of the first and putting the game on ice with seven more in the third inning.
Nicole Chris' RBI single in the bottom of the third allowed WLU to avoid the shutout. Bennington and Kilbane doubled in a losing cause.
West Liberty returns to the WLU Softball Complex on Sunday to host Fairmont State in a noondoubleheader.
