Lady Hilltoppers Settle for Split at Salem

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team came within an out of sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Salem International on Wednesday but had to settle for a split at Hope Field.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (13-23) dropped a 3-2 extra-inning heartbreaker in the opener but rebounded to hand the host Tigers (11-29) a 2-1 loss in the finale.
All the scoring in the first game occurred in the eighth inning as Salem International came from behind to pull out the win.
Madison Collett's RBI single highlighted the top of the eighth for West Liberty as the visitors broke up a scoreless tie with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the frame.
It turned out to be not quite enough, however, as SIU scratched out one run and moved runners up to second and third before Vanessa Ramirez came through with a game-winning 2-out, 2-run single.
The loss spoiled a fine outing by Hilltopper starter Savannah Sieger, who blanked the Tigers on one hit through the first five innings while striking out two and walking one.
West Liberty was held to just three singles in the second game but the opportunistic Hilltoppers scored both of their runs in the fifth inning without benefit of a hit.
A hit-by-pitch followed by a three-base throwing error and a successful suicide squeeze gave WLU a 2-0 lead and that proved more than enough for Megan Bosley.
The sophomore hurler went the distance in the circle to get the win, scattering six hits while striking out three and giving up only one walk.
West Liberty returns to the WLU Softball Complex on Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Shepherd.
