Cardinals Take Two From WLU Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team dropped both ends of a road doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (7-13, 3-7) came out on the short end of a 5-0 score in the opener and saw the host Cardinals (11-11, 5-5) come from behind for a 2-1 nod in the finale.
Skylar Minzler gave West Liberty an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap when she delivered an RBI single in the top of the second.
A trio of Hilltopper hurlers carried that edge into the bottom of the sixth only to see WJU pitcher Mallory Chapman lead off the inning with a solo home run, knotting the count at 1-1. Dana Achille followed with a double and eventually came around to score what proved to be the game-winner on an infield error.
Chapman went the distance in the circle to pick up her second complete-game win of the day, striking out 10 West Liberty hitters without walking a batter and giving up only three hits.
The Black and Gold hadn't been able to get anything going against Chapman in the opener as the Cardinal ace spun a one-hit shutout with four strikeouts and no walks.
Dana Achille provided more than enough support for Chapman with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first. Charley Troggio broke up Chapman's no-hit bid with a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth.
The Hilltoppers will try to bounce back on Thursday when they host Salem International in a 2 p.m.doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex.
