Hilltoppers' Sieger Improves to 6-0 on Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team traded shutout wins with West Virginia State on Friday in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Lady Jacket Field.
The games were moved up from Sunday due to inclement weather in the weekend forecast.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (8-8, 3-3) blanked the Yellowjackets (14-14, 1-5) by a 1-0 count in the opener only to see the hosts rebound with a 5-0 nod in the finale.
In the first game, a clutch 2-out RBI single by Nicole Chris in the top of the fourth provided all the offensive support Savannah Sieger needed as the WLU hurler improved to 6-0 on the season.
Chris' base knock, along with a fourth-inning triple by Sydney Bennington, were West Liberty's only hits in the tightly-played contest.
The win didn't come without some late drama as Sieger and the Hilltoppers had to survive a seventh-inning threat from the host Yellow Jackets.
After Sieger had blanked W.Va. State on one hit through the first six frames, Cheyenne Herrera led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left field line and moved up to third on an infield grounder.
The next batter was walked intentionally and Linda Hall relieved Sieger in the circle.
State's Madison Rafuson smacked a grounder to first but Bennington fired a strike to the plate to cut down a sliding Herrera, leaving runners on first and second. Hall then retired the final batter to earn the save.
The Hilltoppers pounded out six hits in the second game but couldn't string enough of them together to dent the scoreboard. Chris and Kelsi Johnson each had a pair of singles to lead the way.
West Liberty remains in Kanawha County on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Charleston.
