West Liberty Softball Earns Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Malone (Ohio) Tuesday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (6-8) shook off a 3-1 loss to the Pioneers (7-4) in the first game by bouncing back to claim a 5-2 win in the finale.
Savannah Sieger hurled 6.2 innings of shutout ball in the second game to earn the win, improving her record to a spotless 5-0 on the season. Sieger struck out five and didn't walk a batter while giving up only three hits.
Sydney Bennington had three singles and an RBI for the Black and Gold while Nicki Mihalik chased home a pair of runs with a triple and a single. Samantha Kilbane added two singles and two RBIs while Kelsi Johnson doubled.
A trio of Malone pitchers combined to hold West Liberty to just five singles in the opener. Marley Thompson broke up their shutout bid with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
The West Liberty women head to western Pennsylvania on Thursday for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against perennial Atlantic Region power California (Pa.).
