Lady Hilltoppers Split in North Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The West Liberty University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Fayetteville State at Lamon Street Park on Monday.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (3-5) were 6-0 shutout victims in the opener but rebounded with a 9-1 rout of the Broncos (6-8) in the second game.
West Liberty took control early in the finale, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding two more tallies in the third.
That turned out to be more than enough as Taylor Wright and Marley Thompson combined for a 2-hit gem in the circle, striking out 8 and not surrendering a walk. Wright worked the first 4.1 innings to earn the win before Thompson slammed the door with 2.2 innings of no-hit relief.
Sydney Bennington led an 8-hit barrage, driving in 5 runs with a double and a home run. Charley Troggio added a double and a single while Kelsi Johnson singled twice and chased home a pair of runs. Kaitlyn Higginbotham weighed in with two RBIs.
It was a different story in the opener as the Hilltoppers managed just two singles against Fayetteville ace Carley Green. The hosts had 10 hits and took advantage of four WLU errors to pull away.
Weather permitting, West Liberty and the Broncos will return to the diamond on Tuesday for another afternoon twinbill.
