Lady Hilltoppers Knock Off East Stroudsburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – The West Liberty University softball team opened the season here Saturday by splitting a pair of one-run games against teams from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Coach Herb Minch's Hilltoppers handed East Stroudsburg a 3-2 loss in their season opener before dropping a 4-3 decision to Indiana, Pa. in an afternoon contest.
In the first game, the Hilltoppers scored single runs in three of the first four innings and played errorless defense behind a pair of strong pitching performances to make them stand up against the Warriors.
Savannah Sieger hurled the first five innings to get the win, striking out 4 and walking 2. Marley Thompson earned the save with two innings of scoreless relief.
Sydney Bennington led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run and added a single to pace the WLU attack. Nicole Chris singled, doubled and scored a pair of runs while Kelsi Johnson and Nicki Mihalik chipped in with RBI singles.
In the second game, Bennington doubled home a pair of runs in the top of the first but IUP plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead and the Hilltoppers couldn't get back on top.
Johnson had three singles and scored two of WLU's three runs while Chris banged out two more hits in a losing cause.
The Hilltoppers return to the Salem complex on Saturday with a rare tripleheader. West Liberty takes on Shippensburg (Pa.) in a 10 a.m. game before challenging Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) and Edinboro (Pa.) in the afternoon.
