Hot-Shooting Concord Upsets No. 2 Hilltoppers

Men's Basketball | 2/9/2017 9:59:00 PM

Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. – A 3-point play by Concord's Tommy Bolte snapped a 104-104 tie with just 6 seconds remaining here Thursday night and gave the hot-shooting Mountain Lions a 107-104 upset of No. 2-ranked West Liberty at the Carter Center.
Bolte's game-winner foiled a spectacular second-half comeback by Coach Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers (21-2, 15-2), who trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half before storming back against a Concord (8-15, 4-13) team that shot a blistering 70 percent from the floor in the first half and better than 60 percent for the game.
West Liberty, which had blown out Concord, 125-73, in the first meeting of the season three weeks ago at the ASRC, never led as the Mountain Lions opened the game with a 9-0 burst and never looked back in sprinting off to a 60-48 halftime lead.
The Hilltoppers hit just 2 of their first 11 shots from the floor after intermission and Concord appeared to have things well in hand, taking its largest lead of the night, 79-58, on a B.J. Hamlet 3-pointer with 13:35 to play.
West Liberty still trailed, 96-82, as the clock ticked under 7 minutes when the Black and Gold caught fire.
Dan Monteroso and Devin Hoehn provided most of the scoring as the Hilltoppers exploded for an 18-2 run over the next three minutes. Monteroso capped the surge with a rebound basket and a pair of free throws following a Concord technical to forge the game's first tie, 98-98, with 3:57 still to play.
After another tie at 100-100, West Liberty missed 3-point shots on back-to-back possessions and the Mountain Lions' Aaron Miller knocked down a pair of mid-range jumpers to put the hosts up, 104-100, with less than two minutes remaining.
A clutch 3-pointer from freshman Clay Guillozet cut the deficit to 104-103 with 1:13 to go and WLU came up with a big defensive stop to get the ball back with just over 40 seconds on the clock.
Monteroso was fouled on a drive to the hoop with 23 seconds left and hit 1-of-2 charity tosses to knot the score at 104-104, setting the stage for Bolte's game-winner.
Hoehn hit six 3-pointers and led West Liberty with 25 points while Monteroso added 23 points – all in the second half – to go along with a team-high 9 rebounds. Brady Arnold and Guillozet came off the bench with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Miller led all scorers for Concord with 26 points while Bolte finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Stephen Thompson and Cam Shannon rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Mountain Lions with 19 and 15 points, respectively.
The Hilltoppers return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. game at UVa-Wise.
