URBANA, Ohio –
Grace Fodor's conventional 3-point play put the West Liberty women ahead with 1:32 to play and the Black and Gold made it stand up in rallying to a 69-67 win against Urbana at the Grimes Center on Thursday.
Coach
Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers (9-18, 8-13) trailed by as many as 12 points in the opening half but battled back over the final two quarters to complete a season sweep of the Blue Knights (6-19, 3-18).
Neither team led by more than five points in the fourth quarter of a game that saw four lead changes in a frantic 58-second span during the waning minutes.
Urbana took a 65-64 lead on a pair of Stefanie Davis free throws with 2:29 to play but Fodor, a 5-7 freshman guard, slipped inside to put back a missed shot by
Marissa Brown for a 66-65 West Liberty advantage as the clock ticked past 2 minutes.
Following a Blue Knight timeout, Davis knifed down the lane for a layup to put the hosts up, 67-66, with 1:51remaining only to see Fodor come up big again.
The Hilltoppers worked the ball inside to Brown and the 6-3 sophomore post flipped the ball across the lane to Fodor, who banked in a short jumper as she was knocked to the floor by Urbana's Megan Beachy.
Fodor knocked down the charity toss with 1:32 to go and it proved to be the difference as the Blue Knights came up empty on their final two possessions before time expired.
Brown led WLU with 23 points and 7 rebounds while
Brandi Beader added 13 points and 5 boards. Fodor finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds and a pair of steals while
Johnie Olkosky just missed a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Urbana got 24 points and 10 rebounds from Sylvia Hudson. Davis and Jennifer Alflen added 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The West Liberty women close out the regular season on the road Saturday afternoon with 2 p.m. tipoff at Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit.
