ATHENS, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Concord here Friday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.
Coach Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (16-13, 7-7) came out smoking with a convincing 25-19 win in the opening set but the host Mountain Lions (12-17, 6-6) responded with a 25-13 decision in the second set to square the match.
The turning point came in the third set when Concord, which had trailed for much of the set, came on strong down the stretch to pull out a 27-25 nod. The Mountain Lions kept right on rolling, closing out the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth set.
Raimey Benson had 15 kills and 3 blocks to pace West Liberty while Olivia Baumhoer weighed in with 13 kills and 2 blocks. Sydney Scherer and Stephanie Leonard combined for 15 kills and 7 blocks with Scherer adding 11 digs.
Amanda Leonard came up big in a losing cause with a double-double (38 assists and 14 digs) while Kailee Cunningham finished with a team-hgih 28 digs.
The Hilltoppers head even farther south on Saturday for a noon match at UVa-Wise.
