URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University women's basketball team came out on the short end of a 92-84 shootout against Urbana here Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Grimes Center.
The hard-fought win kept the Blue Knights (3-1, 3-0) unbeaten in MEC play as Coach Kyle Cooper's Hilltoppers (2-5, 1-2) battled gamely throughout but couldn't find an answer for Urbana's Stefanie Davis.
Using her speed and quickness to great advantage, the 5-7 senior wing poured in 26 of her career-high 38 points during the second half to help the Blue Knights keep the Black and Gold at bay.
The teams traded leads for much of the early going before a brief second quarter surge sent the hosts into the locker room with a 44-33 lead.
Urbana carried a 64-53 advantage into the fourth quarter and even though West Liberty cut the margin into single digits on several occasions, the Hilltoppers couldn't string enough stops together to get over the hump.
Marissa Brown had another strong game in the paint for WLU with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Brandi Beader tossed in 15 of her 19 points after intermission while McKenna Shives and Audrey Tingle rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Davis was anything but a one-woman show for Urbana, which shot nearly 60 percent from the floor for the game. Erin Morrow backed Davis with 15 points while Danie Shaffer and Sylvia Hudson finished with 14 points each.
West Liberty returns to the friendly confines of the ASRC on Saturday to host Notre Dame (Ohio) in a 2 p.m. clash.
