WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team threatened but was unable to break through here Tuesday night as defending Mountain East Conference champion Wheeling Jesuit claimed a 3-0 win at the McDonough Center.
Coach Kayla Mull's Hilltoppers (13-10, 4-4) got off to a sluggish start with a 25-13 setback in the opening set but the tide turned quickly in the second set as WLU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and maintained that advantage for much of the set.
West Liberty appeared on the verge of being the first MEC team to take a set from the Cardinals (17-4, 8-0) this season when an attack error by Jesuit's Cassie Meyer gave WLU an 18-15 edge.
An attack error by the Hilltoppers and back-to-back kills by WJU's Maddy Smyth knotted the score at 18-18 and put momentum back in the Cardinals' corner. The hosts went on to score the final 10 points of the set to deal the Black and Gold a frustrating 25-18 loss. Jesuit wrapped up the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Caitlin Clarke and
Raimey Benson led the West Liberty attack with 8 and 7 kills, respectively.
Amanda Leonard had 17 assists and
Kailee Cunningham chipped in with 15 digs.
The Hilltoppers return home to host Charleston on Friday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the ASRC.
