Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead here Sunday afternoon but couldn't hang on as league-leading Glenville State rallied for a 102-72 victory at the Waco Center.
Coach Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers (3-10, 2-5) used 3-pointers from Emily Bucon and McKenna Shives along with a power post move by Marissa Brown to open up an 8-2 lead a little more than 2 minutes after the opening tip.
West Liberty still led, 11-7, after a Brandi Beader bonus bomb as the clock ticked past the 6-minute mark but that's when the Pioneers (12-1, 6-1) began to turn the tide.
Glenville, which leads the nation in scoring and 3-point field goals, answered Beader's trey with a Kristin DesRocher 3-pointer and Tayana Stewart cashed in a layup off a steal to put the hosts up, 12-11, at the 4:50 mark.
The Pioneers kept the pedal to the medal until Erika Toney capped a 14-0 run with a driving layup for a 21-11 Glenville lead with 1:32 left in the opening frame.
Beader finally stopped the bleeding with another 3-pointer but the Pioneers took a 25-14 lead into the second quarter and the Hilltoppers were unable to battle their way back.
West Liberty held Glenville to a season-low 8 3-pointers while hitting 16-of-38 from behind the arc but couldn't overcome 29 turnovers and a 52-41 rebounding disadvantage.
Shives and Beader drained a combined 11 3-pointers to share the bulk of the scoring load for the visitors with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Toney had a game-high 20 points for the Pioneers, which also got 17 points from McLeod and a dozen from DesRocher in picking up their ninth straight win.
The Black and Gold hit the road again on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. game at West Virginia Wesleyan.
