No. 4 West Liberty Holds Off Pioneers in Overtime

Men's Basketball | 1/8/2017 6:37:00 PM

Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Devin Hoehn scored 10 points in the final 1:54 of overtime here Sunday afternoon to help Coach Jim Crutchfield's No. 4-ranked Hilltoppers hang on for a 108-105 win at Glenville State.
West Liberty (12-1, 6-1) led by as many as 18 points in the first half but the Pioneers (6-5, 3-4) came on strong down the stretch to force the game into overtime.
The Hilltoppers never trailed in the extra period as a David Dennis 3-pointer put WLU ahead to stay, 95-92, at the 4:21 mark and a conventional 3-point play from Dan Monteroso made it 98-92 with 2:45 remaining.
A 3-pointer by Glenville's Jon Dunmyer cut the gap to 103-100 with 1:04 left but a spinning floater in the lane from Hoehn made it a two-possession game again with 44 seconds to go.
Darhuis Nunn raised Pioneer hopes with another 3-pointer, making it 105-103 with 14 seconds to play, but Hoehn knocked down three free throws in the final 10 seconds to close the door.
All five starters hit double-figures in a typically balanced Hilltopper attack.
Monteroso had another big game with 25 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals while James Griffin drained five 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds - both career-highs.
Hoehn matched Griffin's 24 points while Dennis stuffed the stat sheet again with 16 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and a pair of steals. Zac Grossenbacher had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots before fouling out in overtime.
The upset-minded Pioneers – who came into the game having won six of their last seven outings – also had five double-figure scorers.
Brett Morris led the way with 26 points and 15 rebounds - both game-highs - while Terry Davis also finished with 26 points and cleared 10 rebounds. Dunmyer knocked down six 3-pointers to account for the bulk of his 22 points while Nunn and Andrew Johnson had 13 points each.
The Hilltoppers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Buckhannon for a 7:30 p.m. game against West Virginia Wesleyan.
