WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Garrett Vulcano won the 197-pound weight class and six other West Liberty wrestlers placed in the top four here Saturday as Coach Mitch Smith's host Hilltoppers posted a third-place finish in the West Virginia Invitational at the ASRC.
Alderson-Broaddus had three individual champions and claimed the team title with 75 points. Wheeling Jesuit was second with three individual champs and 67 points. West Liberty finished with 49 points to edge Ohio Valley for third place. WVU Tech was a distant fifth with 15 points.
Vulcano, a standout linebacker on the WLU football team, nipped fellow West Liberty grappler Logan Kemp by an 8-7 count in the 197-pound championship match.
Bryce Humphreys gave the Hilltoppers two runner-up finishes in the day-long meet as he battled Wheeling Jesuit's Dustin Warner to the wire before dropping a 7-5 decision in their 133-pound final.
West Liberty's Zach Brown won by injury default against Alderson-Broaddus' Travis Harrington in the third-place match at 125 pounds. Josh Cornell notched a 12-2 major decision against Josh Spurlock in an all-Hilltopper third-place match at 149 and Nate Dawson scored a 12-4 major decision against WVU Tech's Will Van Hoose in the 184-pound third-place match.
The Hilltoppers return to dual meet action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. test at Mercyhurst.
