WLU Volleyball Splits Twinbill at ASRC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team split a non-conference doubleheader here Tuesday night, sweeping Salem International by a 3-0 score in the first match before dropping a 3-2 marathon to Pitt-Johnstown in the finale at the ASRC.
Coach Kayla Fetsko-Mull's Hilltoppers (11-9) took care of business quickly against the Tigers (2-12), racing away to identical 25-10 wins in the first two sets before closing out the sweep with a 25-21 nod. Olivia Baumhoer, Stephanie Leonard and Sydney Scherer all had 7 kills to pace the Black and Gold. Miranda Garmenn had 10 assists and Kailee Cunningham added 19 digs.
In the second match, the Mountain Cats (8-5) eked out a 25-22 win in the first set but WLU squared the match with a 25-20 win in the second set. Pitt-Johnstown won the third set, 25-17, but the Hilltoppers rebounded with a 25-21 win to force a fifth and deciding set. 
Amanda Leonard got West Liberty off to a fast start with an ace on the opening serve but UPJ won 8 of the next 10 points and the hosts were unable to battle all the way back as the Mountain Cats prevailed by a 15-8 score.
Caitlin Clarke had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs while Amanda Leonard just missed her third triple-double of the season with 9 kills, 21 assists and 18 digs. Raimey Benson had a strong showing with 8 kills, 5 aces and 5 blocks with Baumhoer adding 8 kills and 2 blocks in a losing cause. Garmenn finished with 17 assists and Cunningham paced WLU with 20 digs.
The Lady Hilltoppers return to Mountain East Conference action on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at UVa-Wise.
