West Liberty Volleyball Opens With 2 Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 INDIANA, Pa. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team got its season off to a flying start Fridayafternoon by sweeping its first two matches in the Quality Inn Crimson Hawk Invitational, hosted by Indiana (Pa.) University.
Coach Kayla Fetsko-Mull's Hilltoppers outlasted Alderson-Broaddus in a 3-2 thriller to start the day before routing Holy Family (Pa.) by a 3-0 count in their second match.
West Liberty dropped a 25-22 decision to A-B in the opening set but bounced back to win the next two by scores of 25=22 and 25-17. The Battlers pulled out a 26-24 squeaker in the fourth set only to see WLU pull away to a 15-10 win in the fifth and deciding set.
The Leonard sisters each posted double-doubles for the Black and Gold. Amanda Leonard hammered down a match-high 19 kills to go along with a dozen digs while Stephanie Leonard stuffed the stat sheet with 6 kills, 12 digs, 10 blocks and a pair of service aces.
Raimey Benson was a force at the net with 11 kills and 3 blocks while Caitlin Clark added 8 kills and 4 blocks, Morgan Farley had 6 kills and 6 blocks and Sydney Scherer had 4 kills and 7 blocks. Kailee Cunningham led the team with 28 digs to go along with 3 service aces.
Despite the two-hour marathon against Alderson-Broaddus, the Hilltoppers had plenty left in the tank for Holy Family as West Liberty swept the Philadelphia-based squad by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-22.
Amanda Leonard led the way with 8 kills, 4 blocks and 11 digs while Benson had another strong outing with 7 kills and 3 blocks. Scherer had 5 kills and 5 blocks with Stephanie Leonard adding 4 kills and a match-high 8 blocks. Cunningham led the team with a dozen digs while Miranda Garmenn had 7 assists.
The Hilltoppers close out the tournament with two more matches on Saturday, taking on Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) in a 10 a.m. match before wrapping things up against Ursuline (Ohio) at 3 p.m.
