WLU Women Earn Split on Final Day of Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team settled for a split of its final two matches in the MEC/PSAC Challenge at the ASRC on Saturday, dropping a thrilling 3-2 decision to Mercyhurst in an early morning affair before rallying to a 3-1 win against Slippery Rock in the afternoon.
In the morning match, the Hilltoppers (8-6) dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-20 but battled back to win the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-18, forcing a decisive fifth set. The Lakers (6-5) broke a 12-all tie with three straight points to escape with the win in a 2-hour marathon.
Raimey Benson had a huge match for the Black and Gold, blasting 19 kills to go along with 2 blocks and a pair of service aces. Hannah Guidish added 9 kills, Caitlin Clarke had 8 kills and 3 blocks and Stephanie Leonard chimed in with 7 kills and 5 blocks. Katie Cornelius had a double-double with 30 assists and 14 digs. Miranda Garmenn just missed a double-double with 20 assists and 9 digs while Kailee Cunningham led all players with 26 digs.
In the afternoon match, The Rock (6-7) jumped out to an early lead with a 25-17 win in the opening set but WLU evened the count with a 25-20 nod in the second set and took command with a 25-17 decision in the third set. Slippery Rock didn't go away quietly but the Hilltoppers were finally able to close out the Pennsylvania squad with a 29-27 victory in the fourth set.
Benson led the way again with 13 kills and a dozen digs while Mackenzie Sims came up big with 12 kills and 30 digs. Leonard added 10 kills and Sydney Scherer had 7 blocks while Cunningham led all players with 36 digs. Garmenn had a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs while Cornelius finished with a match-high 26 assists and 8 digs.
The West Liberty women return to MEC action on Tuesday when they travel to South Euclid, Ohio for a 6 p.m.match against Notre Dame.
