Hilltoppers Throw Scare Into No. 19 Bobcats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team just missed upsetting No. 19 West Virginia Wesleyan in the first game of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (9-32, 2-17) took the nationally-ranked Bobcats (35-5, 17-3) extra innings in the opener before falling by a 7-5 count in eight innings. Wesleyan muscled up for an 11-2 win in the finale.
In the opener, West Liberty stormed back from an early 5-0 deficit to force extra innings only to see the visitors get a two-out, two-run double in the top of the eighth to pull out the win.
Kelsi Johnson drove in two runs with a home run and a single for the Hilltoppers while Nicki Mihalik added a double and a single. Nicole Chris had two singles and two RBIs while Damia Mogielski and Sydney Bennington also enjoyed multi-hit games. 
The Bobcats scored five runs in the second and plated six more in the fourth to put the second game out of reach. Johnson homered for the second straight game and also singled to pace the WLU attack. Taylor Paladino added a run-scoring single.
Weather permitting, the West Liberty women will host Glenville State on Sunday in a 2 p.m. twinbill.
