Cards Take Two From Lady Hilltoppers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Wheeling Jesuit on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (9-31, 2-16) saw a seventh-inning rally fall just short as the Cardinals (23-11, 11-3) escaped with a 3-2 win in the opener. WJU coasted to a 9-1 win in the finale.
In the opener, Jesuit took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh and survived a late WLU comeback effort.
With two out and two on, Nicki Mihalik delivered an RBI base knock and moved up to second on the throw, putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Cardinal ace Mallory Chapman got the next batter on an infield grounder to seal the win.
Mihalik and Nicole Chris each had a pair of singles to pace the Hilltopper attack.
Jesuit broke open a close contest in the nightcap by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth and adding four more in the top of the fifth.
Kelsi Johnson had three of West Liberty's four hits in the second game, including an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Hilltoppers hit the road on Thursday for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at WVU Tech.
