WLU Softball Splits With Concord

Softball | 4/3/2016 10:58:00 AM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Concord on Saturday afternoon.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (9-27, 2-12) handed the Mountain Lions (19-13, 8-6) a 3-2 setback in the first game before the hosts bounced back with an 8-0 win in the finale.
In the opener, the WLU women broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth and Savannah Sieger went the distance in the circle for the complete-game win.
Kelsi Johnson - who had opened the game with an RBI single in the top of the first - put the Hilltoppers ahead to stay with a two-out RBI single in the decisive fifth inning uprising.
Johnson then came all the way around to score what proved to be a crucial insurance run when Sieger followed with a double to the fence in centerfield.
Concord made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run and putting the tying run in scoring position with two out, but Sieger retired the next batter on an infield grounder to finish off the win.
The Mountain Lions scored in every inning but the fourth to win the second game going away.
The Hilltoppers couldn't get anything going against Concord's Abby Beatty, who improved to 6-0 on the season by scattering three harmless singles in a 5-inning "mercy rule" shutout.
West Liberty concludes its southern swing on Sunday with a noon doubleheader at UVA-Wise.
