Hilltoppers Fall Short in Regional Showdown

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision at Bluefield State on Saturday in a battle of the top two teams in the Atlantic Region.
The host Big Blues (11-2) grabbed an early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches and swept all six singles matches to knock off Coach Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (10-4).
Bluefield State, the defending Atlantic Region champions, is No. 1 in the region again this year. West Liberty has been No. 2 in the regional rankings all season.
The Hilltoppers got off to a good start on Saturday as WLU's No. 1 doubles tandem of Baptiste Perrin and Santiago Gutierrez coasted to an 8-4 win against the Big Blues' top doubles pairing of Jacob Carey and Aziz Yuldashev but the rest of the day belonged to the hosts.
West Liberty returns to Mountain East Conference action on Sunday with a 3 p.m. match at Concord.
