Men's Tennis | 4/23/2016 7:17:00 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team blasted Charleston, 5-2, in a Mountain East Conference Tournament semifinal here Saturday afternoon to punch a return ticket to Sunday's MEC Tournament championship match at the Schoenbaum Tennis Complex.
Coach Sam McCullough's two-time defending MEC champions will be gunning for their second straight MEC Tournament crown Sunday at noonwhen the No. 2 seeded Hilltoppers (16-5) battle top-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan (19-4) in the tournament final.
The Bobcats blanked UVA-Wise, 5-0, in Saturday's other semifinal while WLU avenged its only league loss in the past two seasons with the convincing win against the Golden Eagles.
West Liberty took control of Saturday's match from the outset, sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into the singles matches.
Baptiste Perrin and Santiago Gutierrez teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with Andy Ponder and Matt Tully matching that 8-2 victory margin in their No. 2 doubles match. Pablo Cimorra and Martin Moncayo completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
Perrin took care of business quickly with a 6-1 6-0 rout of Charleston's Alec Foote at No. 1 singles. The Golden Eagles picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles but Moncayo clinched the win for the Hilltoppers with a 6-1 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles, setting up Sunday's championship match against West Virginia Wesleyan.
Sunday's winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional tournament with the loser likely receiving an at-large berth.
