Hilltopper Softball Splits With Fairmont

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Fairmont State Saturday afternoon at Rosier Field.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (10-36, 3-21) pulled out a 6-5 win in the opener but the Falcons (17-19, 12-10) bounced back for a 7-0 win in the finale.
West Liberty scored twice in the top of the seventh to come from behind in the opener. Damia Mogielski led off the inning with a game-tying home run to dead centerfield and the Hilltoppers were just getting started.
With one out, Kylee Ensign singled to right and stole second base to get into scoring position. Kelsi Johnson followed with a single up the middle and Ensign sprinted home with the go-ahead run.
Savannah Sieger sealed the win in the bottom of the seventh, yielding a two-out single before ending the game with a strikeout.
Ensign paced a 12-hit barrage for WLU with three singles and two RBIs. Mogielski had a single to go along with her game-tying homer while Taylor Paladino chipped in with a double and a single. Johnson finished with two singles and an RBI while Nicole Chris highlighted a three-run third inning with a two-run double.
In the second game, Fairmont State scored four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as Hannah Absalom struck out seven Hilltoppers without walking a batter in hurling a seven-hit shutout.
Johnson had a double and a single while Julie Tenney added a pair of base knocks for the Black and Gold. Paladino and Sieger also doubled in a losing cause.
The West Liberty softball team heads to the Eastern Panhandle on Sunday for a 1 p.m. twinbill at Shepherd.
