Hilltopper Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

The West Liberty University men's tennis team split a pair of Mountain East Conference matches over the weekend.
Coach Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (13-4, 6-1) dropped a 6-3 decision to Charleston on Saturday but rebounded quickly with a 9-0 shutout of UVA-Wise on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (9-7, 5-0) got off to a fast start in Saturday's upset win by taking two of the three doubles matches to carry a 2-1 lead into singles play.
West Liberty's Matt Tully and Martin Moncayo put the Hilltoppers back on top briefly with straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, but the other four singles matches were three-set nail-biters and UC swept all four of them to take over first place in the MEC standings. Tully and Pablo Cimorra provided WLU's only point in doubles play with an 8-5 nod at No. 3 doubles.
The Hilltoppers had no trouble getting back on track against UVA-Wise (8-7, 2-2) on Sunday as West Liberty breezed to three straight wins in doubles action before reeling off six straight-set victories in singles play.
Baptiste Perrin, Santiago Gutierrez, Andy Ponder, Tully, Cimorra and Luke Flanagan were the singles winners for WLU. Perrin and Gutierrez teamed up for the win at No. 1 doubles with Ponder and Tully taking the nod at No. 2 doubles and Flanagan joining Cimorra for the victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Black and Gold step out of conference play on Thursday when they host Mercyhurst in a 3 p.m. match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
