Lady Hilltoppers Swept at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team was swept by Glenville State Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (9-35, 2-20) came out on the short end of a 4-2 count in the first game and took the Pioneers to extra innings in the finale before Glenville (12-29, 7-15) pulled out a 3-2 win in the ninth.
In the opener, the Pioneers scored one run in each of the first four innings to hold off the hosts. Nicki Mihalik had a double and a single for WLU while Nicole Chris added a pair of singles. Kelsi Johnson and Madison Collett each singled and drove in a run.
The Hilltoppers' Savannah Sieger and Glenville's Samantha Weaver locked horns in a classic pitcher's duel during the second game, trading zeroes through the first seven innings before each team finally broke the scoring ice.
The Pioneers scraped out a run in the top of the eighth and Weaver retired the first two batters in the bottom of the frame only to see WLU's Damia Mogielski rip a solo home run over the left-centerfield fence to send the game into the ninth.
Glenville scored twice more in the top of the ninth but the Hilltoppers refused to fold. West Liberty plated an unearned run and got the tying run to third base with two out before Weaver struck out the final batter to end the game. Collett and Johnson each doubled to pace the Hilltoppers' five-hit attack.
The West Liberty women hit the road next weekend with a Saturday doubleheader at Fairmont State and a Sundaytwinbill at Shepherd.
