WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the spring here Saturday as No. 30-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic pulled out several close matches to hand the visiting Hilltoppers an 8-1 loss.
The Sailfish took control early by sweeping all three doubles matches. West Liberty's nationally-ranked No. 1 doubles tandem of
Andrew Ponder and
Santiago Gutierrez battled to the wire and beyond only to fall in a hard-fought tiebreaker. The No. 2 doubles pairing of
Baptiste Perrin and
Martin Moncayo also came up just short in an 8-6 decision.
The trend continued in singles play. Although
Andrew Ponder continued his strong start to the season with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, Palm Beach Atlantic won the other five matches. Two of the matches went to a third set but the Hilltoppers couldn't get over the hump.
