Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – League-leading Shepherd swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from West Liberty Saturday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Still unbeaten in MEC action, the Rams (14-6, 8-0) held off Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (6-24, 0-10) by scores of 3-1 and 6-2. In the opener, West Liberty took a 1-0 lead into the fifth only to see Shepherd plate two runs in the top of the fifth and add an insurance tally in the sixth to pull out the win.
Kelsi Johnson's RBI single in the third gave WLU the early lead while Nicki Mihalik had the hosts' other two hits with a single and a double. Savannah Sieger pitched well in defeat, giving up just five hits while striking out six and issuing only one walk. The Rams jumped on WLU with four second-inning runs in the late game and never looked back in finishing off the sweep.
Johnson and Mihalik led the Hilltoppers at the plate once again. Johnson smacked out a pair of singles and drove in a run while Mihalik charted another multi-hit game with a double and a single. Madison Collett knocked in West Liberty's first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. The Hilltoppers step out of conference play on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Cedarville (Ohio).
