Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to Fairmont State Friday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (6-22, 0-8) came up short by an 8-4 tally in the opener and saw the Falcons (9-11, 4-2) pull out a 7-2 nod in the finale. In the opener, West Liberty trailed just 4-3 heading into the seventh inning only to see Fairmont take advantage of three Hilltopper errors and a passed ball to break the game open with a four-run uprising. The hosts pounded out three hits and got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame but couldn't dig all the way out of the hole.
Kylee Ensign drove in a run with a double and single while Nicki Mihalik also had a multi-hit game with a double and single for WLU. Savannah Sieger and Taylor Paladino each singled and drove in a run. In the second game, Fairmont scored three times in the top of the fourth and added two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Kelsi Johnson led an 8-hit attack with three singles for the Black and Gold while Mihalik once again chipped in with a double and single. Sieger added a pair of singles in a losing cause. The Hilltoppers will try to bounce back on Saturday when they host Shepherd in a 2 p.m. twinbill.
