Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team knocked the reigning Mountain East Conference Pitcher of the Week out of the box but couldn't close the deal as league-leading Charleston swept an MEC doubleheader by scores of 6-5 and 12-0 Tuesday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (6-20, 0-6) threw a scare into the Golden Eagles (17-4, 6-0) in the opener. Back-to-back MEC Pitcher of the Week Alli Burdette took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth for the visitors but a walk to Taylor Zeiger and a bunt single by Kylee Ensign brought the tying run to the plate in the person of Hilltopper hurler Savannah Sieger. Sieger found a pitch to her liking and launched it deep over the left-centerfield wall, knotting the score at 4-4 and bringing Jessie Rowe to the circle in relief of Burdette. Charleston broke the tie with two runs in the top of the seventh and WLU could get only one of them back in the bottom of the frame as UC escaped with the win.
Sieger's three-run blast highlighted a six-hit attack for the hosts Taylor Paladino tripled while Ensign and Nicki Mihalik each had a single and an RBI. The second game was a different story as Rowe scattered five singles in a route-going shutout and Charleston scored eight runs in the last two innings to break things open. Damia Mogielski and Sydney Bennington each had two hits for the Hilltoppers. West Liberty returns to the WLU Softball Complex on Friday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Fairmont State.
